St. Luke’s to Sponsor One of The Nation’s Largest Youth Girls Hockey Tournaments

67 teams from across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota and Canada
will compete in 136 girls hockey games filling nine local arenas, announced Erica McCarthy,
President for the Duluth Girls’ Hockey Association, and representative for St. Luke’s Icebreaker
Invitational. Games will begin Friday, January 15, at 10:45 am. Admission to all games is free.
It is expected that more than 1,300 girls ranging in age from 8-16 will compete in the tournament.
Combined with parents, coaches and other visiting guests, the Tournament will likely draw more
than 4,000 people to Duluth over the weekend. Filling nearly 2,000 hotel rooms and countless
restaurants, these guests will create a minimum $500,000 economic impact during the Tournament.
“This is the 21st Anniversary of the Icebreakers and our association is proud to have built upon the
framework of our founders to create one of the largest girl’s hockey tournaments in the country.
We are thankful for the sponsorship support of St. Luke’s Hospital and our other community
donors,” said McCarthy. “Most importantly, we’re pleased that as our primary fundraiser, this
Tournament makes it possible for us to provide our girls with new opportunities to learn and grow
that will help them develop into the players of tomorrow.”
The theme for the 2016 St. Luke’s Icebreaker Invitational is “Community…Together Giving Back.”
As part of that theme, the Icebreakers have held a jersey fundraiser, selling off old Icebreaker
jerseys to players and alumni. “This has allowed our organization the opportunity to give back to
St. Luke’s, who has so generously supported us throughout the years,” says McCarthy. All
proceeds from the jersey sale will go directly towards one of the many St. Luke’s charities.
A full schedule of games and scores is available online.
In addition to participating in the Tournament games, UMD has extended an offer of discounted
tickets for families involved with the Invitational to the UMD Bulldogs/North Dakota hockey game
on Friday, 1/15 and Saturday, 1/16. Discounted tickets can be purchased here.
“We invite the community to participate in our fantastic event,” adds McCarthy. “On behalf of the
Duluth Girls Hockey Association, I am proud to welcome the players, coaches, families, volunteers
and spectators from around the region.”
