National Bank of Commerce (NBC), is the area’s largest, locally-owned, full-service community bank. It’s important for NBC to help their associates grow and connect within the community which is why they fully back their participation in programs like Leadership Duluth, and the projects that come along with them.

Jaron Larson is part of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce 2018 Leadership Duluth class. As part of the chambers curriculum, participants are exposed to various social challenges that affect our community. Participants then team up to develop, execute and implement a service project that helps fight against these social issues. Jaron and his group have decided to direct their attention towards AICHO – American Indian Community Housing Organization. Their goal is to build AICHO a solar rooftop garden that is highly effective, efficient and long lasting. AICHO’s goal with the garden is to create an indigenous learning and sharing space while supporting an inclusive environment that serves the community needs of broader Duluth. AICHO is located in Duluth’s “food desert” which makes their efforts in creating additional food sources an instrumental addition to the community.

Much of the planning and collaboration is already happening. Jaron and his team are now in the process of raising funds for the actual construction of the garden. The estimated cost of materials and construction is $5,000. NBC has stepped up to show their support by donating funds which will go towards building materials.

Jaron expressed, “I am very excited to be a part of this Leadership Duluth team. We feel strongly about our service project and being able to lend a hand to a local non-profit is a great experience. AICHO is already a very sustainable organization so to add another element like a rooftop garden is pretty cool.  We have already put a lot into this project so we can’t wait to see our efforts come to flourish. ”

The rooftop garden grand opening is set for May of 2018. If you are interested in learning more or donating to this project please contact Jaron Larson
