Hermantown Marketplace District Looks to Expand

HERMANTOWN, Minn. – The city of Hermantown is expanding their marketplace area near Haines Road and Miller Trunk Highway.

City officials unveiled a new Hermantown Marketplace sign in front of the Kwik Trip at Haines Road and Maple Grove Road.

They hope highlighting the area will get more businesses to move to Hermantown in the coming years.

“We’ve had a really good start with all the existing businesses that we’ve had in the marketplace and just hoping to expand on that in the years to come,” said Hermantown Community Development Director Eric Johnson.

“We’ve had some great people here with Fleet Farm coming in as well, getting a lot more people into Hermantown and just looking to expand on that

June 04, 2017 10:56 PM

It was a high flying weekend in Duluth as pilots from all over the country showcased their talents in the sky for the annual airshow.

“If you get a chance to walk around (the airshow), you will see aircraft going all the way back to before World War 2 obviously up to the F-35, which is one of the most modern aircraft we have and everything in between,” said Roger Reinert, one of the event’s organizers.

“Five days ago we were like what are we going to do with these clouds and the rains,” said Reinert.

New Miller Creek Medical Clinic Now Open

January 23, 2017

HERMANTOWN, Minn. -The new Miller Creek Medical Clinic in Hermantown is now open.

The clinic opened its doors on December 19th and held their community open house and ribbon cutting ceremony today.

St. Luke’s officials are hoping the new clinic will allow them to expand on services they offered at their old location.

“We’re trying to create a more convenient option and access of care for those patients so they can stay up in the community where they live and work versus having to go downtown for some of those specialty services,” says clinic director Ben Bengtson.

The new clinic is located on Loberg Avenue near HOM Furniture and Fleet Farm.

It offers urgent care services from

St. Luke’s Clinic in Hermantown going up in High-Profile Location

It’s Hermantown, so perhaps it’s not surprising a hockey analogy was used in describing construction of a new medical clinic.

“Congratulations for having the vision to see where the puck is going,” said Karen Pionk, executive director of the Hermantown Chamber of Commerce, during a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for the St. Luke’s Miller Creek Medical Clinic.

The Duluth hospital already has a Miller Creek Medical Clinic, on Miller Trunk Highway next to Skyline Lanes bowling alley. It opened in 1996.

But the replacement clinic will be bigger — about 20,000 square feet versus about 14,000 square feet. It will be able to offer procedures and specialists not available at the current clinic, said John Strange, St. Luke’s CEO.

New Hermantown Hotel Opens in Time for Marathon Weekend

A month ago, it appeared that the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Hermantown might not be open in time for the busy Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

But — in some good news for both the business and for runners looking for a last-minute place to stay — the five-story, 80-room hotel opened its doors on Thursday. It’s located south of Miller Trunk Highway and west of Haines Road.

“Weis Builders did a great job keeping everything on schedule,” General Manager Brianna Vander Heyden said. “If people are still without hotel rooms for Grandma’s Marathon, we’re open and here to help.

Vander Heyden said the hotel didn’t want to take reservations until they could fully serve guests.

Hotel amenities include

Fresh out of college, she was living in Grand Marais and managing the Waters Edge Trading Co., a small outdoors clothing and gift shop in Tofte. “Waters Edge is where I fell in love with the outdoor industry,” Benson-Goupil said. “I found that more enticing than going to law school.” A few years into the job, she decided to open her own store. That has led to the recent launch of Urban Forest, an upscale outdoors apparel shop at Sugar Maple Crossing in Hermantown.

More Kwik Trip stores coming to region

In June 2014, Scott Teigen told the News Tribune that by the end of 2015, Kwik Trip would have 15 stores in the Northland.

That’s going from zero to 15 stores in just 18 months.

Teigen’s projection was close.

As the end of 2015 approaches, the last of 14 Kwik Trip gas and convenience stores will open, stretching from Duluth to Moose Lake, in the chain’s dramatic entry into the Twin Ports market.

This year’s fall rollout of new stores began in mid-September with the opening of the Kwik Trip at U.S Highway 53 and 21st Avenue East in Superior. In October, stores opened on Miller Trunk Highway near Arrowhead Road in Hermantown, as well as at Central Entrance and
